Our Plantation


Zampalm Plantation is Zambia’s first ever commercial oil palm plantation. The Plantation is in Kanchibiya district, Muchinga province.The Plantation is located 100 km Northwest of Mpika, off Kasama road and 16 km past Kopa Village, in the Bangweulu plains where Zampalm owns 20,238 hectares. A total of 3,864 hectares is under oil palm cultivation. The location of Zampalm is longitude 30041’ and latitude 11041’, on plateau, approximately 1,100 metres above sea level in a subtropical environment with 5-6 months rain season (annual rainfall is around 1100 -1400 mm) and temperatures from 10 – 35’C. It is a rain-fed plantation.

Planting material: The progenies planted are the best hybrid tenera (DXP) seeds from ASD in Costa Rica. They are cold and drought tolerant hybrids proven to yield satisfactorily in high altitude and cooler conditions. There are seven varieties (types of plant materials) in the Plantation. The Plantation is profiled according to varieties and age.

Plantation Purpose.

The main purpose of establishing an oil palm plantation:

Deficit of edible oil in the domestic market
The deficit for the domestic consumption edible oil market is estimated to be 120,000 Metric tonnes per annum and Zambia imports oil to satisfy this demand. Crude palm oil is among oils largely imported and is locally refined. Zambia uses palm oil in the edible industry.

Rising global crude palm oil price
The global demand for crude palm oil has been steadily increasing in recent years, driven by its use in a wide range of industries, including food, cosmetics, and biofuels.

Oil Palm Plantation.

The total cultivated area is 3,839.2 ha.The plantation is profiled in the year of planting, varieties and blocks.The primary output of the plantation is fresh fruit bunches (FFB) which is processed to produce crude palm oil. The first inflorescence (flower) appears in the second year after planting. The immature period is 4 - 5 years before commercial fruit harvest.Current FFB harvest is from mainly from 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 plantations. Others from 2016 and 2017 Plantations
